Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies

Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies

From the moment of its accidental invention at the Toll House Inn back in 1933, the chocolate chip (or “Toll House”) cookie has been a staple of American snacks. Having run out of Baker’s chocolate to make her cookies, Ruth Graves Wakefield broke pieces of semi-sweet chocolate into chunks, hoping they would melt during the baking process and mix with the batter. Luckily for us, the chocolate did not mix in, and the chocolate chip cookie was born. Wakefield then sold her recipe to Nestle in exchange for a lifetime supply of chips, and the legendary cookie was dispersed across the globe. Today, its popularity is at an all time high, and nearly one out of every two cookies baked in American households are some sort of chocolate chip variety.

Variations on the classic abound, including the chocolate chocolate chip cookie, and even the “negative”, featuring a chocolate cookie dotted with white chocolate chips. And now, this staple of every dessert lover’s diet has been reborn for the vegan crowd! By mixing batter free of milk, eggs, and butter, and substituting vegan chocolate for traditional semi-sweet chocolate chips, vegans can enjoy a cookie with every bit as much tradition and goodness as Ruth Wakefield’s original. When baked with care, the best vegan chocolate chip cookies can outshine their animal product containing predecessors. Crushed and sprinkled on top of soy or rice ice cream, dipped into a chilled glass of soy milk, or savored alone on a plate, the dairy and egg free chocolate chip cookie is every vegan’s dream come true.
